The Sunflower

You can’t help but smile back at a sunflower.

Among the most famous paintings of all time are Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers. He used bold colors and the thickness of the paint to seemingly carve the flowers onto the canvas so that you can feel the energy expressed in them. In this drawing, we’ll use the flat sides of small pastel chalks on blue pastel paper, to create a painterly feel. By layering bold color on top of color, the sunflowers will leap out from the dark background. Then, we’ll bring the piece together by outlining some areas to create definition and detail.
